Irish ceramic plaque
Celtic Bird Plaque
The Celtic Bird plaque is handmade at the foothills of the Sperrin mountains in Ireland. It is made from a
textured stoneware clay and finished with various coloured glazes and rich metallic oxide.
A piece of hessian string is attached to hang the plaque.
Handmade
Local ceramic artist, Michelle Butler, uses a handmade mould to press the plaque from.
Each piece is pressed, finished, dried, biscuit fired, glazed and finally fired again to 1230 degrees centigrade.
Celtic Bird
The Celtic Bird plaque is based on the heron, crane or stork which feature very commonly in celtic art.
During the celtic christain period the stork was recognised as the sacred bird of St. Columba.
It was associated with life and featured prominently in the ancient manuscripts.
The heron, because it mated for life was often used on celtic wedding bands.

This plaque is so much nicer in person than seen here. The colors are vibrant and pleasing, and the patina is almost soft , smooth. I hung it amongst pictures, mirrors and other pieces. What a unique and delightful addition to our collection of Irish treasures!
